The role of technology in our world is expanding daily. You connect with friends on your phone while also shopping for clothes online. You can express your message to thousands of people around the world in seconds. You can find a wealth of information on nearly any topic with just a few taps on a phone or tablet.

Ours is now a digital world. But what does it mean to be human in a digital world? That’s the question that a group of diverse speakers and art and design professionals attempted to answer at the recent Applied Brilliance conference in Brooklyn. The conference’s theme was “Being Human in a Digital Age” and featured 11 insightful speakers, thought-provoking exercises and ample time for connecting and exploring. The role of technology in our world is expanding daily. Diverse Perspectives on Technology in Design

Some attendees initially felt confused by the conference’s lineup of speakers, as many of them came from outside the art and design industries and didn’t seem to have much in common withDigital Age Conference each other. But after experiencing the conference, the general consensus was that the diverse lineup helped to provide a more holistic view of technology in design, and more broadly, how technology is shaping and redefining the human experience.

Notable Conference Speakers

Speaker and security expert Tracey Ann Kosa’s contributions resonated strongly with many at the conference. One attendee said Ms. Kosa’s presentation was quite alarming. Another said that Ms. Kosa caused her to wonder what the world would be like for her children — would they be so dependent on technology that they would be little more than an arbitrary number?

Another speaker who sparked discussion was Alexandra Courtney, who is a conflict specialist. She spoke about how new technology has made the world more interconnected. For example, the purchase of a new cell phone and disposal of an old one can end up having an impact on a community on the other side of the world. She emphasized a greater need for responsible decision-making when it comes to one’s digital footprint.

Technology and Modern Office Design

While a two-day conference on technology’s impact on mankind may seem like a subject for sociologists, the topic is actually especially important for art and design professionals. Technology creates a host of questions for designers to consider. Not the least of these questions is how new technology products should be delivered to the consumer. How can digital products be seamlessly integrated into the human world and the world of modern office design?
